New Book: Artists in Crisis

I'm so happy to share that "Artists in Crisis: Rethinking the Mental Health Challenges of Creative and Performing Artists" is now published!

I’m honoured to contribute a chapter to this volume, which brings together colleagues and mental-health practitioners working closely with creative and performing artists.

My chapter, "Sounding Resilience: Navigating Adversities in Lives Dedicated to Music", draws from years of clinical and research work with musicians. I write about the lived impact of injury, burnout, and identity rupture; the complex biopsychosocial pressures that shape musicians’ lives; and the dynamic nature of resilience as a process, not a trait.

The chapter also traces the development of The Green Room in Cologne as a response to systemic gaps in musician support, and outlines a framework, created with colleagues across Europe, which argues for care as a structural principle in the arts rather than a crisis intervention.

The book as a whole examines the broader mental-health landscape facing artists today - moving beyond myths like the “suffering genius” and asking what meaningful, culturally attuned support could look like.

Congratulations to Eric Maisel, Arnoldo Cantú, and Susan Raeburn for their support and editing!
